MARIJKE

Remember the spectacular mural whose colorful panoramas adorned the walls of the Aquarius Theatre during the Los Angeles run of “HAIR”, or the walls and interior of The Beatles’ “APPLE” Cultural Center in London? These remarkable examples of art history were created by Marijke, the multi-talented artist from Amsterdam where she started her career as a commercial artist for advertising agencies. Marijke’s unique talents find expression in a diverse use of media, including oil paintings, watercolors and fashion designs. Her distinctive work has had an easily discernable influence on other contemporary artists and designers, and has attracted the patronage of many international celebrities.

As the lead artist of the group “the Fool” during the 60’s in London, her innovative endeavors for The Beatles’ cultural center “Apple” included mural designs, editions of fine art reproductions and a commercial fashion line. She painted a piano for John Lennon and a mural at the home of George Harrison, designed costumes for the Beatles’ “All you need is Love” TV show and “The Magical Mystery Tour” film. She designed sets and costumes for the film “The Wonderwall”, directed by Joe Masott. She also painted instruments, designed album covers and promo material for bands such as Cream (including the most recognizable rock guitar of all time: the Eric Clapton Gibson SG), Procol Harum, The Move, The Hollies, The Incredible Stringband and others.

Going solo again after several years, living in Los Angeles during the 70’s and 80’s she illustrated “The Book of Knowledge” by Prof. J.J. Hurtak, Designed a commercial fashion line “Astraflash”, manufactured by Bill Berman and an exclusive fashion line “Summer Sunday” produced by Michael Butler, She painted a mural in celebration of the 80 year jubilee of the Polytechnic School in Pasadena and designed sets for “Karaoke Fest” at the Hollywood Palladium, painted the pools for actress Valerie Perrine and for the movie “Cocoon”. She also created many easel paintings during that period. In the 90’s the public was able to view her latest paintings at the Pacifica Asia Museum and “Ishi” and “Hopi Ceremony” canvases were installed in the permanent collection at the South-West Museum,

In 2011 her artwork was featured in the book “Electrical Banana”, Masters of Psychedelic Art, followed by a book signing party at the Museum of Modern Art in Los Angeles. During July of 2012 Sonos Studio in Hollywood hosted a month long one woman retrospective art exhibit featuring past and present works. Art and fashion samples are now in the permanent collection at the Victoria & Albert Museum, London and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. A series of painted guitars are currently on display at the Tokyo Guitar Show.

Marijke has been living in Los Angeles since 1968 with her beloved husband and animals.
